Accessibility Timeline

The following information is designed to help users understand the state of accessibility on the GoodMFG website and the efforts being made to improve.

January 13, 2025 – New Web Content & Automation (WC&A) specialist hired.

January 18, 2025 – Conducted an accessibility audit and discovered the following issues.

  • Possible instances where the links are not clear or descriptive.
  • A possible issue with H-tag hierarchies
  • Keyboard navigability issues, including missing bypass blocks
  • Missing alt-text on multiple images
  • Missing aria-labels on multiple buttons
  • The use of Pixels vs. REM for font sizes

With the exception of keyboard navigability, these issues were typically sporadic incidents rather than site-wide incidents, caused in part by the growth of the site over time. Plans were drafted to begin addressing these issues.

January 23, 2025 – Replaced website contact forms sitewide. Footer form is stored and adjusted elsewhere. All other forms should now have clear labels.

January 24, 2025 – Investigated the use of an accessibility widget. Investigation revealed that these widgets do not promote accessibility to the degree previously believed, and that in some cases they actively inhibit accessibility efforts. Abandoned widget-based solutions.

January 28, 2025 – Converted all sitewide fonts to REM instead of pixels. This may not have solved all issues as there are places on the site where individual updates have used manually created fonts and font colors instead of using sitewide fonts.

January 28, 2025 – Sitewide “Paragraph” text darkened to a darker shade of gray (#6C6C6C) to improve contrast and readability.

February 4, 2025 – Missing alt-text created for all images on site. Alt text is now added to images as a matter of course.

February 7, 2025 – Missing aria labels created for every button on the site.

February 21, 2025 – WC&A specialist obtained permission to draft an accessibility statement.

February 25, 2025 – WC&A Specialist drafted accessibility statement.

February 25, 2025 – WC&A Specialist began drafting SOPs.

February 25, 2025 – Used Web Aim Contrast Checker to check contrast for the three primary color schemes used onsite.

Current values:

  • Paragraph: #6C6C6C on #f4f4f4 (the primary color of the hex background): 4.77:1. meets WCAG 2.1 AA level guidelines.
  • Forest Green Text: #09843B on #f4f4f4 (used primarily on subheaders) 4.36:1. Meets WCAG 2.1 AA level guidelines.
  • Navy text: #002330 on #f4f4f4 (used primarily for subheaders, blog post subheaders) 14.88:1.. Meets WCAG 2.1 AA level guidelines.

Refinements will be made to how these color schemes are used as we continue to address H-tag hierarchy issues sitewide. In addition, a need to create SOPs and to handle contrast testing for hero images has been identified.

February 25, 2025 – Web & Graphic Designer added flipcard design to the Good Trailers page this month as a design improvement. Need for aria tag audit on flipcards on the Good Trailers page identified. Work scheduled.

March 3, 2025 – Tested the Owner’s Manual PDF for accessibility. Verified that it does work with screen readers, but the screen readers skip entirely over certain elements, like warning labels.

March 4, 2025 – Conducted sitewide link audit and tracked down links that were unclear in context. Updated links to be more contextual and easier to follow. Addressed Aria-Labeling issues on flipcards located on the Good Trailers page.

March 6, 2025 – Updated aria labels on Good Modular Sheds page.

March 7, 2025 – Accessibility page designed and posted to website. SOPs shared with marketing team.

March 21, 2025 – Web developer has agreed to begin working on a keyboard-navigable version of the website. Do not yet have an estimated date of completion.

April 14, 2025 – Completed heading structure audit. Identified contrast issues with link text across the site, fixed by switching global link color to #0000CC (which appears to resolve the WCAG AA contrast ratio failure). Added ‘footer issues’ to the list of known accessibility issues. Audited 52 pages: 9 require additional discussion with the team before making changes; 42 were updated to clean up the heading structure or confirmed to have a correct heading structure; 1 page was retired.

April 16, 2025 – Adjusted PX to REM on home page. Inspected page with “Inspect” element and noticed the underlying CSS seems to be overriding these changes. Tested Font Resize on Edge browser and verified style and fonts are responsive at higher levels though not at lower. Earmarked this issue for discussion with web developer to take place after keyboard navigability is addressed. Ran an Accessibility.org test of the site. Uncovered possible contrast issues with the cookie compliance banner. Changed to #002330 on white and adjusted the link color to #000CC.”

April 21, 2025 – Concerns raised by the design team required a temporary restoration of the original link color. Will continue to investigate potential solutions to the issue of the links possibly failing contrast guidelines.

May 8, 2025 – Fixed H-tag issues on three blog post pages. Four additional pages have deeper design issues still. One page is plug-in generated and still not sure what the impact of touching that one would be. Conversations continue about the possibility of a site redesign which could address accessibility issues from the ground up.

May 15, 2025 – Brought new “financing” page live. Added aria labels to buttons and carousels. Added alt text carousel photos. Removed four old, unsalvageable inaccessible pages from website and main nav menu. Due to ongoing issues with flip cards, developed new, UX wireframes to redesign all pages with flipcards and to remove this inaccessible element entirely. Marketing Manager fixed headers sitewide so that the headers are no longer producing contrast issues (to our knowledge) on any site page.

May 28, 2025 – Uploaded new users’ manual. The screen reader reads it just fine but for whatever reasons it won’t read the stickers. Investigating why it won’t read the stickers and warning labels.

Planned Improvements

  • Documentation is being built to address the responsibilities of the “Web Content & Automation Specialist” position. Plans are in place to include regular accessibility audits and fixes in said documentation, so that accessibility remains a part of the role now and into the future.
  • A screen reader test is planned for August 2025.
  • Efforts are underway to make the owners’ manual fully accessible, instead of only partially accessible. A screen reader reads most of the document, but skips some content.
  • The web developer is working on the keyboard navigability issue.
  • An overhaul of the website navigation and content is in process. After full launch, the total site will receive a new accessibility audit to see what has and has not been corrected as a result of the changes.

Ongoing Issues

  • Keyboard navigability is a known issue. We have asked our web developer for a fix.
  • No team member currently has formal training or certification of any kind regarding accessibility. Options for obtaining this training are being explored.
  • We have uncovered several potential accessibility issues with our footer. Footer is not immediately editable by any member of our team. Identified need to work with web developer to address these issues.

Resources

This statement will be reviewed and updated as needed, including but not limited to whenever significant changes are made to the website or significant steps are completed. Planned updates, and their time frames, have been addressed in the “Planned Improvements” section.

Conducting regular audits is already a part of the job description for the “Web Content & Automation Specialist” role. Efforts are underway to establish a reasonable schedule for those audits once the major, ongoing, and overarching issues have been addressed.
